Before establishing Steedman Stagg Lawyers, Nick was a senior partner in the dispute resolution and litigation team of large West Australian law firm Lavan for more than 12 years. Before that, he gained his early experience and honed his technical skills at leading (then) Australian national firm Freehills (and its predecessor firm Parker & Parker) for about 15 years.

Nick is one of WA’s leading defamation and media lawyers. He is fortunate to work for Seven West Media (covering The West Australian, Sunday Times, its many regional newspapers, Community Newspaper Group, online news platforms and Channel 7), and has done so for many years. Channel Nine, Channel 10, the ABC and small, privately owned media entities have all been clients. Nick has acted for company directors (particularly in board take-over situations), prominent business people and entrepreneurs, politicians (including a Premier and Ministers), doctors, lawyers, sports people, charities and NFPs, private schools and colleges, universities and numerous people who get caught up in the online and social media worlds.

The hard rock mining space is another specialty area of Nick’s. He has acted for listed and large mining companies, mining entrepreneurs and investors, insolvency practitioners acting as external controllers of distressed mining entities, private landholders and environmental and community groups in mining disputes in the Wardens Courts and the WA Supreme Court. That work has covered mining tenement application and granted tenement disputes, contested statutory mining expenditure compliance disputes, tenement forfeiture applications, caveat issues, compensation, mining royalty and access agreement issues and disagreements between joint venturers.

Nick’s big firm background has seen him run and manage many large-scale commercial disputes and litigation outside of the defamation area for significant corporate entities including mining, oil and gas companies, other listed and large private companies, government statutory corporations, company directors, investors and shareholders.

There is not much Nick has not seen or done in the dispute resolution and commercial law advisory areas.

He is passionate about his craft, is a sincere people person and is resolutely focused on getting the job done for every one of his valued clients.
